The FRH Torch Initiative

Inspired by the Olympic Torch of Athens, in the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage the “Torch of Heritage and Culture” will travel around Europe collecting personal letters from prominent members of the international community but also from European citizens themselves.

Launched on 8 January in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, the treasure box symbolising the initiative of the Future for Religious Heritage (FRH) network will travel Europe until 11 October 2018, finishing its journey at the FRH Conference in Paris, where the contributions will be presented to the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Mr. Tibor Navracsics.

The FRH Torch will be hosted at a number of events all over Europe, where the contributions describing personal memories and stories relating to religious heritage will be placed in the treasure box.

The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness and safeguard the importance of Europe’s rich religious heritage. The initiative reflects well the motto of the EU: ’Unity in diversity’ - as the FRH Torch will bring together diverse community groups with different traditions and languages in an action to foster unity while celebrating Europe’s diversity. The project is one of the highlighted programs of the event series of EYCH.

The treasure box will arrive to Hungary between 14-16 September in the framework of the Cultural Heritage Days. The route of the Torch is available here. The letters of the treasure box can be read here.
