Photo exhibition: Csango Hungarians in Moldova

20 April – 4 May 2018
The opening of the exhibition will take place on 20 April 2018 in the Balassi Institute in Brussels. After the opening ceremony, the Somos Ensemble will present a short musical introduction into Csango-Hungarian folk music.

Moldavian Csango traditions, culture and everyday life are presented through the photos of Gergely Csoma, sculptor. Gergely Csoma is interested in the archaic traditions, dialects, music, dresses of Csangos and in the problems deriving from their particular situation as a minority. He travelled throughout Moldova for three decades, presenting his experiences in pictures and eight books. He established a close relationship with Csangos; therefore, he wanted to participate as a teacher in the program of Hungarian education resumed after almost fifty years. He lived among them in a farmhouse for a year. At this 16 square meters, he taught Hungarian grammar, writing and reading to the children of Szabófalva in their free time. These experiences are presented in his book, Megtalált Szavak (Found Words).
