International Day for Monuments and Sites

The core event of the International Day for Monuments and Sites in Hungary dedicated to the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018: „Shared Heritage – Shared Responsibility”, takes place on 18th April, 2018 in Szentendre, Hungary.

The theme of the event contributes to the year-long European programmes as well as focuses on the heritage of the Carpathian Basin as „shared heritage.” Following the traditions of the previous years, the first part of the event is consisted of introductory and welcoming remarks by representatives of the hosting settlement and - county, the government as well as of the organizers.

These speeches place the actual event within the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage initiative, and point out the role and importance of international cooperation. By introducing the colourful heritage of the host settlement, Szentendre an expressive example is presented too.
Another important element of the programme is the award ceremony of diverse prizes established by the Hungarian National Committee of ICOMOS. These prizes that are also monitored by the media appreciate or promote the protection of Hungarian monuments, their wise usage and sustainable revitalization for the communities.

The participants, approximately 120 - 150 persons, can network and have informal discussions during the light lunch.

The afternoon session is a half-day scientific meeting where talks and lectures are presented about the monument protection in the Carpathian Basin from the period both before and after the political system change. They analyse the progresses, the outcomes and the challenges. The heritage protection aspects of the Visegrád Group and their experiences are also discussed.

At the end of the event, the closing remarks summarize the points of these lectures and comments.
