In 1965, the second underground mining museum in Europe, the first in Hungary was opened in Salgótarján. In 1986, an exhibition beyond the surface was also opened in the former mining apartment building. The solemn opening of the terrestrial mining exhibition which has been renewed in the framework of the Ágoston Kubinyi Program will be on 30 November 2018.

The underground museum opened in 1965, and the exhibition beyond the surface opened in 1986  were established with the aim of preserving and informing the history of Nógrád mining and demonstrating relistically the present-day mining. The museum maintainers consider the development to be a very important task, so after the reconditioning of the underground exhibition space in 2005, the terrestrial exhibition will be completely renewed by 2018, which will be inaugurated on 7 December 2018.
